😞 is a face with lowered eyes, drooping eyebrows and a mouth bent downward, the look of someone whose hopes just fell through. It has been in Unicode since version 6.0 in 2010, and the official name says exactly what it does: “disappointed face.” People also call it the “bummed out face” or “let-down face.” It is not really crying, just deflated by something that didn’t turn out as expected.
How it’s used
- A bad result: “Checked the results and I didn’t get in 😞”
- Plans falling through: “Sold out before I even got to the checkout 😞”
- A cancelled event: “Picnic’s off, it’s pouring 😞”
- Disappointment in a person: “I really thought they’d show up 😞”
- Mild regret: “They’re out of the last one 😞”
Compare it with 😢, which has an actual tear and real sadness, and 😭, which is loud sobbing. 🥺 pleads with big eyes, while 😒 is annoyance rather than letdown. 😞 is the quietest and most low-key of the group.
Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world
In English, 😞 maps neatly onto “bummed,” “let down” and “I expected better.” Disappointment is a heavy word in English; the parent line “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed” is a well-known meme precisely because it can sting more than anger. A 😞 sent to someone can therefore read as a mild reproach as well as a sigh.
In Korea, it fits words like 아쉽다 (regretful), 시무룩하다 (glum) and 김빠지다 (deflated), but in actual chat ㅠㅠ is far more common and 😞 is used less. Because it is rarer, receiving 😞 can feel a bit more serious than ㅠㅠ, and sending it to a senior may sound like blame.
In Japan the name is 失望した顔, though in practice it covers がっかり, 残念 and しょんぼり, the small letdowns of daily life such as a cancelled plan or a favorite shop being closed. When the feeling is stronger, 😢 is the usual step up.
Where it gets misread
- It is hard to tell apart from 😔 (pensive face). Both look down, and on some platforms they are nearly identical. 😔 leans reflective and glum, while 😞 leans toward a letdown.
- Aimed at a person, it can read as “you let me down.” If you mean your own situation, say so in words.
- It is a poor substitute for an apology or condolences. 🙏 or 😢 fit better.
- It differs from 😟 (worried): 😞 is the feeling after something has already gone wrong.
Design differences by platform
All four major platforms share the drooping brows and mouth, and differ mainly in heaviness. Apple’s version has clearer brows and a more serious mood, while Google’s Noto is rounder and simpler and feels lighter. Microsoft’s Fluent and Samsung tilt the eyes and mouth a little differently, and some designs make 😞 and 😔 so similar that only the text around them tells the two apart.
